Secret Cinema is one of the most exciting events happening in London. Although tickets average at £40-£50 which is typically more than I’m willing to spend, the totally immersive experience makes it absolutely worth it.
I don’t want to give too much away because the whole ethos of the event is that it is a secret. You don’t find out the location until you get to the tube station and once you enter, you are met with surprise after surprise. I will, however, give a spoiler free review of the current Secret Cinema event: Moulin Rouge.
“Do you believe in beauty, truth, freedom and love?”
The excitement starts before you even reach the location. Once you buy tickets you sign up to the “Society of love” and are given your own character with a backstory and costume so that you play your own unique part in the action. On the day, when you arrive at the tube station at your set arrival time, you will be met by a group of eccentrically dressed individuals, all playing their own part in the experience. You will then be met by your group leader who will lead you to the secret location. Once you get there you put your phones in sealed bags so that photographs can’t be taken and the authentic 20th century Paris experience is not ruined by people tweeting and snapchatting. You then walk through a dark tunnel and are taken out of the hustle and bustle of 21st century London and into the exciting, bohemian world of the Moulin Rouge.
I don’t want to give too much away about what goes on inside, but I will say that the set designs were very impressive and after a while it did feel like I was walking through the Montmere Quarter during the bohemian revolution. People are dancing and singing everywhere you turn and you are constantly encouraged to get involved with the action in any way you can. As a typically shy person, I at first felt nervous about joining in with the dancing and singing but after a while you become comfortable in your character and you become part of something bigger – you have a role in everyone else’s experience for the evening.
At the end of the night, everyone gathers in a big room to watch the film and after spending hours immersed in the movie experience, the movie takes on a whole new entity. Everybody joins in with the songs and the atmosphere is unlike anything I have ever experienced – for the duration of the film you feel completely at one with the audience.
The live actors and performers during the movie and the rest of the night definitely deserve praise for making the experience above and beyond. They come right down into the audience during the movie and make you really feel like you are part of it. If you hadn’t felt it already, you will really feel the movie come alive before your eyes. It is the enthusiasm and authenticity of the actors that for me, really completed and enhanced the experience.
I really don’t want to say anything more because I think the experience is best enjoyed when it is a surprise, but I would without a doubt recommend buying tickets while they are still on sale. You can buy them here:
Enter the secret world of the bohemian revolution, happening right in the city of London and remember: The greatest thing you will ever learn is just to love and be loved in return.
